The Cat Is Peeing On The Couch…Again

If you have owned cats, some of you may have yelled at sometime “The cat is peeing on the couch!”. This is something I experienced today and I want to share my story.

She’s such a pretty cat. Her snow white fur and big baby blue eyes make her look so sweet and innocent. However, I feel she is anything but. We adopted a 9 month old domestic short hair named Amara from our local animal shelter back in May 2017. We brought her into a pet free home and for about a week she was the queen of the castle. About a week later we decided we wanted a smaller inside dog as well. So we adopted Honeybun, a 19 pound mix breed. We brought her home and let the two meet. For the first day the cat chased and tormented the dog. Honeybun is a cowardly dog. Though it didn’t take her long to get used to the cat and they seemed to become good friends.

They would chase each other, lay on each other and play. So everything seemed ok between the two. Around July, I picked up some weekend shifts that started at 7am, so I was up by 6am. I recall going downstairs and the cat followed me down, hopped on the couch and she was squatting kind of oddly. It took a second for it to register but she was pissing on my couch. I immediately clapped my hands and told her no. She ran to the litter box and finished. I was in such shock. I sit on that part of the sofa. The dog sits on that part of the sofa. Why on earth would she pee in a place we are always occupying. So our sofa started smelling like cat urine. It was the most horrific smell and I tried everything to clean the smell away, but it continues to smell.

Our sofa is a pleather material and it had been peeling in the area she started urinating. I finally found a product that appeared to work well. I purchased the NonScents Pet Odor Remover Spray from Amazon. It worked wonders. The area stopped smelling and the cat had not been caught peeing on the couch again. So the cat started sleeping on the sofa a lot and I figured the problem was finally over. Since our pets have light colored fur, and we have a black sofa, we can see their fur constantly on the sofa. I wanted to get a pet cover. I found a great sized cover for pets on Amazon also. It was the Mason Reversible Sofa Cover. I figured it would be good to combat fur and if she happened to have a pissing spell again, it would be a lot easier to wash than the sofa itself. I truly figured everything was going well. Then today happened.

So this morning, I was running behind and I went to feed the animals and realized the cat was out of food. I decided I would just give her some dog food as it was “small dog” formula and it would tie her over until I could get her some food this afternoon. I know how horrible of me to give a cat dog food. Anyways. As soon as I gave her the food, she smelled it and looked at me like “What the fuck is this shit?” She immediately walked to the sofa and jumped up on top of the pet cover on the side that she was used to pissing on and squatted. I clapped my hands and she stopped mid piss and ran upstairs to her litter box and finished.

I immediately called my boyfriend and complained because he absolutely adores this cat but she has it out for me. This wasn’t the only time she has pissed on something that I claimed ownership to. We noticed that she started pissing on my robe. I have a habit of throwing my robe down on chairs or the coffee table some days. And I have picked it up to find it wet and smelly of cat urine. I finally started putting it back where it belongs on the hanger but this made me wonder why she has it out for me.

I have read numerous articles about the issue and they say so many different things such as clean the litter every day. We do that. Another said to keep the litter box in an area where the cat won’t feel cornered. We do that. And then another said the cat may have a UTI and to take it to the vet. We did that. So why is my cat urinating on things that belong to me? Are cats just evil little monsters that use their urine as weapons against our noses and personal items?

Have you had a problem like this? If so, what did you do to correct the behavior?
